Capitol Discovery Day

Capitol Discovery Day
Celebrates the Utah State Capitol
On Saturday, August 29, 2009
Noon – 10 pm

Something for the whole family! The Utah State Capitol is at it again for their 5th annual Capitol Discovery Day. This free event, open to the public, will take place on August 29, 2009 from Noon until 10 p.m.

Hosted by the Capitol Preservation Board and the Utah Heritage Foundation, Capitol Discovery Day is an event you don’t want to miss. The day will offer a variety of hands-on activities, Capitol tours and live music that will be sure to engage all ages.

Utah families and community members are invited to take part in celebrating the history of the Capitol through turn of the century outdoor games, activities, and entertainment for everyone to enjoy. Some of the games include hoop ‘n’ stick, potato sack races, jump rope and parachute. Participants will also have the chance to enjoy live music performed by local bands through out the day on the newly renovated and historically driven Capitol Grounds.

Inside the beautifully restored Capitol, other activities are offered for children’s imagination, helping them to create a replica of the Capitol Rotunda with tooth picks and gum drops, sculpting clay lions or wyvrens that are found in the Capitol and coloring black and white images of the Rotunda’s paintings. All of this can be experienced while listening to live choirs singing in the heart of the Rotunda.

What is an event with out food? The Capitol Preservation Board feels it is important to support our Utah’s Own companies by giving them the opportunity to offer free food samples and interact personally with Utah citizens.

The last installment of the summer long Movie Under the Stars movie series, will feature Bedtime Stories on the southwest lawn of the Capitol grounds. Free popcorn and more live music featuring the Voo Doo Orchestra beginning at 7:30 pm will be provided for those that attend. Bring a blanket, friends and get ready to enjoy the Capitol under the stars.
