If you are visiting the Utah State Capitol with children please feel free to download the Capitol Bingo sheet on the Utah State Capitol Website. Groups of 15 or less are invited to complete the bingo sheet and stop by the Visitor Services Office for a very special treat. The Capitol Bingo Sheet is a great way the help children learn about the Utah State Capitol by encouraging them to look for the symbols and important artwork that can be found throughout the Capitol.

We offer FREE guided tours on the hour between the hours of 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with the exception of state holidays.

Works of Art

One of the many artists that have touched the Capitol with their artwork is David Koch. Two of his many murals can be found in the House of Representatives; Seraph Young Votes and Engen Brothers. Each mural represents ground breaking moments in Utah history.

In this painting we can see 23 year old Seraph Young in 1870, grand niece of Brigham Young, casting her ballot as the first Woman to vote in the Utah Territories. Much to the dislike of most of the men in the piece, women were allowed the right to vote until 1887. In 1887 the women’s suffrage movement was set back as Congress passed the Edmunds-Tucker Anti-polygamy Act, which among other things, revoked women’s right to vote.

Koch’s second painting is related to the economy of Utah. There are many pioneers who helped make skiing more than a spectator sport. Three main contributors are the Engen brothers, Alf, Sverre and Corey. The Engen brothers first came to Utah in 1930 to compete in a contest sponsored by the Utah Ski Club.

The vision of these men enabled them to literally use materials from the declining mining industry, which had been the staple of Utah's economy for so many years, to build ski jumps and other ski equipment that would help launch Utah's future economy.

These are such beautiful works of art that perfectly show moments that are important to Utah history. These Murals can be found in the House of Representatives.

Heart of a Lion

On the East and West entrances to the Utah State Capitol, all who visit the Capitol are welcomed by the lions, though the majestic gate keepers who rest on these entrances were not always the originals. In 1915, Gavin Jack sculpted the first lions out of cement. Then in 1977, local artist Ralphael Plescia repaired the statues. During 31 years following the repairs, Utah weather had taken its toll on the beautiful lions. In 2008, new lions were constructed and placed on the East and West entrances.

The new lions were sculpted out of white Italian marble by master stone carver Nick Fairplay. The Italian marble, due to its durability, was chosen in order to extend the lives of the lions. The original lions were sculpted out of cement, which is much more likely to become corrosive over time.

The lions were constructed to depict not only the symbolism in their names but also to represent different stages in life as well.

The lions rest on the East and West entrances of the Capitol. Bring your friends and family for a FREE tour to visit the lions, as well as the rest of the Capitol. Tours are given every hour on the hour from 9:00AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Tangled in Emme Packer

Join us this Friday for our last movie of the season. Movie Under the Stars will be showing Tangled, with a live musical performance by Emme Packer.

Friday will be the last movie for this season and as such we have saved one of the best for last. Disney’s Tangled is a fun, family friendly movie that puts a twist on the classic Rapunzel story. In Disney's version of this classic tale, the audience is able to truly get to know the familiar characters, along with quite a few new ones. Rapunzel who is not allowed to leave her tower due to the fact that he Mother has told her that there are ruffians in the world who want her hair. Yet, all she wants to do is visit the floating lights that illuminate the sky every night on her birthday. Then one day she meets a stranger, who changes her out look on the world.

Born and raised in a small farming community in rural Utah, Emme's vocal talent had been known to only a few until at age 18 she self released her first record, the aptly named "Dirty Street." Her brilliant self taught guitar style, honed through thousands of hours of practice in her parents basement, anchored her for her next releases "Better Luck Next Time." in 2005 and "Joy. The Machine." in 2007. The albums found her pitch perfect vocals shining through the paintings of her poetic "dream-scape" lyrics. Her audience suddenly became world wide and she began to tour across the U.S, Canada, and Japan. Artists such as; Sea Wolf, Lydia, Alive in Wild Paint, Kate Voegele, and Denison Witmer began to take notice and added Emme on as their opener. Her shows have given audiences a glimpse of her soothing, yet soaring vocals and her "not of this world" guitar skills. While her earnest words have tugged at heart strings world wide.

Six Short Words and Better off Dead

This Friday Movie Under the Stars is proud to feature the film, Better Off Dead as well as a live musical performance by the band, Six Short Words.

Better Off Dead has become a movie that, for many, brings back memories of their high school years. Throughout this movie we follow the life of teenager Lane Meyer. He has lost his girlfriend, broken his skis, and is constantly being challenged to drag race. Then, Lane meets the foreign exchange student living with his neighbors across the street. This movie puts a funny twist on the daily activities of a teenagers life while making the audience laugh.

Six Short Words is a Band that is relatively new. They have been playing at small gigs for years and finally this fall they are excited to release their first CD. Six Short Words have been greatly influenced by many great bands; James Taylor, Ben Folds, Dave Mathews Band, and Death Cap for Cutie. We are excited for them to play at Movie Under the Stars this Friday.

Everyone get excited! This Friday is going to be a fantastic night. Not only will Movie Under the Stars be showing Despicable Me but The Lovecapades will be preforming live at 7:30!

The Lovecapades are a British/American eclectic alternative pop rock band that has been gigging relentlessly in the Western states; taking time out only to record their latest EP. This new CD, along with the band’s image, quality music, and powerful live shows, have quickly attracted a growing fan base and the attention and praise of industry insiders.

The band has shifted thousands of units, and has also been fortunate enough to work on furthering their expansion with members of Sony Music Entertainment and XL Recordings. The band has toured the UK and Western USA, playing big venues such as Hard Rock Cafe, and sharing the stage with popular bands over hundreds of shows. This Friday get ready for another incredible Movie Under the Stars. We will start off the evening with a live performance by Archie Crisanto. Archie is a native of Salem Oregon, and is now living in the Utah Valley. We could not be any happier to have him perform for us. Archie has recently been on tour performing throughout the southern states. His blues rock sound echoes many of the greats; early Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan,and The Black Keys.

In honor of our movie, Napoleon Dynamite, we are asking our audience to dress up as their favorite character from Napoleon Dynamite. The best dressed audience members will receive a fantastic prize. This movie is the story of a young man named Napoleon Dynamite and his fight against the social norms of high school to help his friend win class presidency. Not only is this a movie that most can relate to but it is also a movie that can make you laugh at every line.

The First Movie of the 2011 Season

The Capitol Preservation Board is thrilled to present the 1^st movie of the 2011 season of Movie Under the Stars. In partnership with the Utah Film Commission, we are proud to present the locally produced film; The Sandlot. Not only is it a Utah crowd favorite for its fantastic one-liners, but also for the meaningful story of the bonds of summer and friendship.

As previously blogged in our Movie Under the Stars questions and answers post, it is wise to arrive early so you can secure that perfect patch of lawn. While you are saving your spot, enjoy a live musical performance from John Allred. John grew up in West Hartford Connecticut and is now spreading his music to Utah.

All musical performances will begin at 7:30 PM. Then at dusk we will begin our featured film. Come and enjoy free popcorn and the magic of Movie Under the Stars!

The Capitol Preservation Board is thrilled to annouce the 2011 Movie Under the Stars at the Utah State Capitol! In it's 4th year of production, this film series has grown in popularity and appeal - drawing over 10,000 viewers to the spacious lawn to view family-friendly films such as Goonies, Enchanted, and the locally produced (and crowd favorite) The Sandlot!

We are grateful for our sponsors who have made this series possible. We thank the Utah Care Foundation and the Utah Film Commission for their support, as well as Harmons for donating FREE POPCORN, and Sugar House Awning Industries for contributing our banners and signs. We are proud that this series is produced without state funds and functions soley on contributions from our generous community.

The cinematic line-up this summer will showcase films with an appeal to all ages: Back by popular demand, we will kick off the series on July 1st with The Sandlot - which was made in our very own Utah! On July 15th, crowds will enjoy the quirky, offbeat comedy Napolean Dynamite, and on July 29th the audience will fall in love with mysterious criminal mastermind, Gru, and his minions in the film beloved by adults and children alike - Despicable Me. On August 12th we will bring you one of our favorite eighties teen films (and also a "made in Utah" favorite) Better Off Dead, and we will conclude the summer series with Disney's latest fairytale wonder, Tangled.

Movie Under the Stars Questions and Answers:

Where, exactly, are the movies being shown?

The movies are projectedonto a HUGE outdoor screen, with surround sound, on the southwest corner of the Capitol grounds. The screen is situated at the bottom of a sloping hill, so every seat is a good seat!

What time do the movies start?

Movies begin at dusk, which is at around 9:00PM in July and 8:45PM in August. Some films last year drew over 1,000 attendees, so it is recommended that you arrive early for good seats!

How early can we come to save our spot?

You are welcome to come as early as you'd like! Feel free to throw down your blankets and pillows and enjoy the pre-movie entertainment.

Are chairs, food, and drink allowed?

Chairs are permitted, but they must be low-profile (under 8 inches) or if over 8-inches, they need to be in the designated chair area. Drinks are permitted and even encouraged, as we do not have on-site food/drink vendors. No alcohol, please. Food is also permitted.

What happens if it rains?

The benefit of checking this blog/the facebook page frequently is that you will know as soon as we have made a decision to cancel a rain due to weather. Shows are not rescheduled if cancelled.

Where do we park?

The best, and safest, place to park is in the Visitors Parking Lot on the east side of the Capitol Building. You are welcome to park along the streets around the Capitol, but pleas ebe very aware of parking signs to avoid tickets!

Are there restrooms?

Yes, inside the Capitol on the 1st floor there are men's and women's restrooms. We have arranged to have the Capitol left open until the film's conclusion to accomodate the restroom needs of our attendees.

Is there live music like there was last year?

Yes! We have some great bands coming this year, and will post the line-up soon!

Are dogs permitted?

Yes, dogs are allowed on Capitol Grounds, but they must be on a leash.

Looking for Volunteers for Capitol Discovery Day

The Capitol Preservation board will be presenting Capitol Discovery Day on the 18th of September. This is an event in which children, families, and all Utah citizens can experience the history and future of the Capitol. We will be looking for 20+ volunteers to help with a variety of volunteer opportunities during the event.

Volunteer duties would include:
1. Instructing children, families, and other individuals on the history of the Capitol.
2. Helping children with activities such as sculpting and constructing gum-drop domes.
3. Takedown and setup. Lifting should be limited to 50 lbs.

There will be three volunteer shifts available. We will be looking for five (5) volunteers from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., five (5) volunteers for 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and ten (10) volunteers from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Volunteers can dress casual but attire should be clean and appropriate for the setting. There will be light refreshments for the volunteers and they will be able to have a lunch break (volunteers would need to bring a lunch.) We may be accepting more than 20 volunteers so no need to worry if you get more than 20 people who express interest.

Allyson Gamble appointed Executive Director, Capitol Preservation Board

SALT LAKE CITY -- Allyson Gamble has been appointed the Executive Director of the Capitol Preservation Board. The Capitol Preservation Board approved Gamble's appointment at its meeting on July 19, 2010.

A working group of the Board recommended that Ms. Gamble be appointed as the Executive Director. The Board accepted the Division of Facilities Construction and Management's offer to perform the Board's accounting functions resulting in a reduction of one FTE. The recommendations were unanimously adopted by the Capitol Preservation Board.

The Executive Director's responsibilities include maintenance, restoration and long range plans for the seven buildings and grounds of the Utah Capitol Complex. The Executive Director also oversees the capitol visitor services program, event and space scheduling, food services and the Capitol gift store.

Ms. Gamble was appointed Acting Interim Director of the Capitol Preservation Board in January, 2010 following the resignation of David Hart. She had been the Director of Communications & Visitor Services.

The 2010 movie series has featured a total of nine movies throughout the summer. The movie will be shown at dusk on the State Capitol's south-western lawn and is free to the public. The pre-show entertainment will provided by The Little Big Band, a band directed by Caleb Chapmen.

The synopsis: Based on the true story of Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy who take in a homeless teenage African-American, Michael "Big Mike" Oher. Michael has no idea who is father is and his mother is a crack head. Michael has had little formal education and few skills to help him learn. Leigh Anne soon takes charge however, as is her nature, ensuring that the young man has every opportunity to succeed. When he expresses an interest in football, she goes all out to help him, including giving the coach a few ideas on how best to use Michael's skills. They not only provide him with a loving home, but hire a tutor to help him improve his grades to the point where he would qualify for an NCAA Division I athletic scholarship.

The Feds swoop in and whisk her away from husband-to-be Derek (Paul Rudd) to a government concealment agency where they dub her Ginormica and leave her to bemoan her losses and spend the rest of her days with strange creatures. Plot: The Goonies (a band of young boys) are spending their last weekend hanging around their hometown, before it's razed for yuppie developers. With that treasure, they could save their town. But the hunt for treasure sends the Goonies, Mikey's long-suffering teenage brother (Josh Brolin), and a pair of teenage girls (Kerri Green and Martha Plimpton) into dangerous proximity to the murderous fugitives, the Fratellis. Forever Strong was filmed in Salt Lake City beginning in August 2006 at three local high schools. Several All-American rugby players, predominantly from the University of Utah, Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University, played in the film. Some Highland Rugby alumni and current players also played roles in the film.

Forever Strong is based on an amalgam of true stories about the Highland Rugby high school team. The character Rick Penning is based on a real member of the rugby team who played in Flagstaff, Arizona and was sent to a group home in Salt Lake City. The story attracted the production company Go Films. The film name "Forever Strong" is taken from the team motto of the Highland Rugby high school. "Forever Strong".

Plot: Rick Penning (Faris) lives life just like he plays rugby; fast, hard-hitting and intense. When life on the edge lands him in jail, prison ward Marcus Tate (Astin) offers him a chance to get back in the game by playing for his rival, Highland Rugby. Reluctantly Rick joins the team where he must adopt the grueling training schedule and unique code of conduct that Coach Gelwix (Cole) enforces, or finish out the season behind bars. Egos clash as bitter competitors struggle to become a team. An unlikely brotherhood is formed with his Highland teammates, just as Rick is released from jail and sent back home to rejoin his former team, coached by his overbearing father (McDonough). Heading into a faceoff with Highland at the National Championship, Rick is forced to choose where his loyalty lies.

We are featuring a home-grown utah-made film as our opener: The Sandlot

The Sandlot is a 1993 American comedy-drama sports film about a group of young baseball players during the summer of 1963. The story is narrated by Scotty Smalls, the shy new kid on the block who wants to join the rowdy pickup baseball team that plays every day in the neighborhood sandlot. But he doesn't know how to catch a baseball, and his stepfather is too busy to teach him. He tries out for the sandlot gang anyway, and though he isn't very good, it turns out he's lucky: there happen to be only eight of them, and nine makes a team. The summer passes blissfully as Scotty learns to play ball under the wing of Benny Rodriguez, the oldest and best player, as well as Ham, Squints, Repeat, and the rest of the kid-eccentrics. The skies darken, however, when Benny literally knocks the stuffing out of the team's only baseball, a sign of impending doom, or worse, bad luck. Wanting to set things right, Scotty returns home and "borrows" his stepfather's ball, which he promptly uses to hit his first home run, knocking the ball clear out of the sandlot into mean old Mr. Mertle junkyard, home to Mertle's legendary guard dog The Beast. Scotty admits that he took the ball without asking, and he naively explains that his stepfather will want it back since it had a woman's name written on it: some lady named Babe Ruth Horror-stricken, the sandlot gang mobilizes to fetch the autographed ball from the clutches of The Beast. . .

Utahns celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream

SALT LAKE CITY — Nearly half a century after Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and said those "four simple words," blacks in Utah have watched barriers felled and milestones reached in an ongoing fight for equality.
From smaller victories, such as the successful push to delay the start of the Utah Legislature to honor King, to the historic election of President Barack Obama, black leaders lauded the strides toward equality Monday on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
"The dream is now a reality," Bridgette Waters, of the New Pilgrim Baptist Church, told a crowd gathered at Sugarhouse Park, hearkening back to King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
Col. Yolanda Dennis-Lowman, commander of the Tooele Army Depot, is herself a symbol of the nation's progress. During the NAACP Salt Lake branch's 26th annual Martin Luther King luncheon Monday, Dennis-Lowman recalled the service of the Buffalo Soldiers and Tuskegee Airmen who could have hardly imagined a day when the nation's military would allow blacks in leadership.
From $65-a-plate lunches to rallies and service projects, the day was dedicated to King and his dream for equality.
"We don't want folks to use today as a day off, but to honor the works of Dr. King," said Jeanetta Williams, president of the NAACP Salt Lake Branch.
Despite the progress that has been made, many said the fight was not over.

In the News: Utah remembers its roots with Statehood Day

Utahns first petitioned for statehood in 1849, two years after the Mormon pioneers first established homes in the Great Basin.
But it took 47 years — and an official declaration from the leadership of the LDS Church stating church members would no longer practice polygamy — before President Grover Cleveland on Saturday, Jan. 4, 1896, issued the proclamation admitting Utah to the Union as the 45th state.
Salt Lake City officials, wanting to be properly prepared for the occasion, postponed the official celebration until Monday, Jan. 6.
But residents didn't wait that long. A battery of the Utah National Guard marched to Capitol Hill and fired a 21-gun salute to alert the city. Businesses closed their doors and crowds swarmed the streets, ringing bells, shooting off firecrackers and blowing whistles.
"The news of the admission was welcomed by the firing of cannon and small arms, the shrieking of steam whistles and every other kind of noise which could be produced," wrote James E. Talmage in his personal diary.
An article in the Jan. 4, 1896, Provo Daily Enquirer said that when a telegram announcing the signing of the proclamation was delivered to the newspaper — and the community ?— "precisely at 9:30 a.m. Mountain Time," the celebration started:

"At once the entire Enquirer building was covered with bunting and flags. The city marshal's office was notified and the Woolen Mills was called up by telephone, the Asylum and other places having steam whistles, and the long expected joyful news imparted. In the incredibly short space of time the entire city was reverberating with the shrieks of whistles, the chimes of bells, shooting of guns and cannon, and the happy shouts of freemen out of bondage. The town was decorated as if by magic and flags were soon seen floating from every public place and housetops everywhere."
Through the years, Jan. 4 has been recognized as Utah's Statehood Day. Sometimes the date coincides with the gubernatorial inauguration, which occurs on the first Monday of a new year following an election. On those occasions, the day is marked with inaugural balls and public ceremonies.
Many other years, like this one, the day passes with little or no notice.
Deseret News photographers have been on hand at many formal Statehood Day events, including the first one. Photo researcher Ron Fox has culled the newspaper's archives for these photographs, some that have never been published.
On Jan. 6, 1896, the Salt Lake LDS Tabernacle hosted the state's official celebration, a 45-star flag made for the occasion in the ZCMI overall and fabrics factory stretched 160 feet along the ceiling. It was the largest American flag at the time.

Officially Opening MARCH 3, 2010!!!

On Statehood Day, Monday, January 4, 2010, the Capitol Preservation Board will begin the process of installing a newly developed free exhibit of documents, memorabilia, educator materials, artifacts and program called Utah in the Union: The Story of the 45th State, celebrating Utah’s 1896 entry into the Union.

The building-wide exhibition will be open from March 2010 through January 2011.The exhibit is specifically designed for Utah students and visitors to the state and those particularly curious about Utah’s history.
By March 3, 2010 – the day Utah Territorial Delegate of Congress Joseph Rawlins introduced the Enabling Act to the House of Representatives in Washington D.C., pushing Utah into statehood – all historical objects, educational display cases and vintage photographs related to Statehood will be in place throughout all areas of the Utah State Capitol.
Exhibits feature several major pieces relevant to Utah history. Objects of interest include an original 45 Star flag to be placed in the Freedom Shrine on the first floor of the Capitol, as well as one of the original copies of the Proceedings Utah Constitutional Convention, published in 1896. In addition, there will be a new 7.5 x 6 topographical map of Utah taken from space, more than 30 historic photographs of Statehood celebrations, and an interactive timeline illustrating Utah’s seven attempts to join the Union.
Capitol Curator Judith McConkie, PhD, stated, “We are indebted to scholars and collectors who have gone before,” she said. “The Utah State Capitol seems, however, a fitting place for assembling a free and educational exhibit throughout the Capitol, especially for school children studying the history of Utah and visitors to our state.”
The Capitol Preservation Board would like to give a special thanks to those who have helped contribute to this exciting and worthy exhibition: The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church History Library, KUED, Utah State Historical Society and Archives, various state newspaper organizations and universities who have all contributed generously to the exhibition, helping to celebrate the 45th state.

The U.S.S. Utah Battleship Exhibit Continues

The free exhibition of the U.S.S. Utah battleship will continue to run until the beginning of February 2010. This exhibit, located on the 4th floor of the Utah State Capitol building, tells the story of the United States Navy’s largest battleship, later to become a training ship, which was to historically fall during the attack at Pearl Harbor.
Complete with beautifully arrayed display cases containing newspaper clippings, historical clothing, battleship artifacts and devises, and miniature replicas, as well as vintage photographs adorning the walls along the 4th floor galleries, this exhibit celebrates the history and significance of the U.S.S. Utah vividly.

No fee’s, appointments or tickets necessary. Just walk right in and view the exhibit at your own pace.

The name of the United States Navy’s largest battleship, referred to as a dreadnought because of its compliment of enormous guns, was announced by Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 from the pulpit of the Salt Lake Tabernacle.
Six years later, she was launched with the words, “I christen thee Utah! God Speed!” by Mary Alice Spry, the 18-year old daughter of Utah’s governor William Spray and who had just begun the ambitious project of constructing the new state house. Spry involved the children of Utah in the official commissioning of the ship—an event attended by the Tabernacle Choir and elected dignitaries—by asking each child for a ten-cent donation toward the traditional purchase of a full set of sterling silver serving pieces bearing the navy seal and Utah Scenes.
For more than two decades as part of the Atlantic Fleet, the ship’s crew knew hard work, danger, heroism and their fair share of fun. They stood at attention as well as at ease on a magnificent ship and until she was retrofitted and re-commissioned as what one historian called the “newest radio Frankenstein” of the Pacific—a target training ship—until she docked at Pear Harbor in December, 1941.

Backyard Mudslingers is owned by Utah native Denice Hyer and located in Sandy, Utah. Denice has a lifelong love of creating art. The medium has differed over the years but the love for making something with her own two hands has remained.
Denice earned her BFA, with an emphasis in Ceramics, at the University of Utah in 1994. Playing in the mud was such a delightful way to get a college education; she spent an extra year getting her degree just for the fun of it. Teaching was a perfect way for her to share the joy of creating, as she taught pottery classes for Salt Lake Community Education.
Window design work, designing gift baskets, making fun food creations, and creating yard art from old farm equipment with her family are examples of ways Denice has enjoyed using her abilities. Her dream of owning a pottery studio was realized in early 2008 and her hands have been muddy ever since. She loves her time there and takes great pleasure in helping others learn the joys of clay.

History Facts: From Arsenal Hill to Capitol Hill

In 1911, the Capitol Commission, created to oversee the building of the State Capitol, focused their efforts on choosing the location of the building.
They contracted one of the most celebrated landscape design firms in the country - the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts. John C. Olmsted, the son of famed landscape architect Fred Olmsted, visited Salt Lake City. He drew a group of potential plans to transform what was then known as Arsenal Hill (the site of local munitions storage) to the Capitol Hill that we know today. Capitol architect Richard K.A. Kletting drew the final landscape plans and work on the Capitol commenced in 1912. Financial difficulties prevented the realization of Kletting’s original plans for the complex. Yet today some of the central elements of his initial designs are realized through the Capitol Preservation Project.

The Capitol Preservation Board was honored to receive the beautiful talents of the Ability and Choice Services Choir today inside the Rotunda.
The choir performances began at 11 a.m. by the direction of Tracy Jones and her Assistant Director Merla W.
This choir works with the disabled adult program from the Ability and Choice Services. They preformed nine songs ending with “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” where they invited the audience to join.
The Capitol Preservation Board would like to give their thanks and appreciation to this wonderful group for sharing their time and talents with us today.

History in the News: Utah woman blazed trail in state politics

In 1896, Martha Hughes Cannon spent a total of $35 in the campaign that led to her election as a member of Utah's fledgling state Senate.
It was a seminal moment in U.S. politics. In that election, Cannon became the first woman in America to be elected to any state senate. The fact that she defeated her husband in the election made her victory part of Utah's folklore.
As a pioneer doctor, a champion of public health, and a polygamist's wife who was also a leader in the suffragist movement, Cannon carved out a unique place in the annals of the state's history.
The Martha Hughes Cannon Health Building was dedicated in her honor in 1986. An eight-foot bronze statue of her was installed in the Utah Capitol Rotunda in 1996, 100 years after her path-breaking election. The statue was recently re-installed on the Capitol grounds following the building renovation.

Martha Maria Hughes was 2 years old when her family converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and emigrated from Wales to New York. A year later the family crossed the Plains to Salt Lake City, burying Mattie's 21-month-old sister in an unmarked grave beside the trail. Her father died days after reaching Salt Lake City in September of 1861.
Martha Hughes was working as a schoolteacher at the age of 14 and worked her way through the University of Deseret as a typesetter for the Deseret Evening News and the Women's Exponent, an LDS Relief Society magazine.
After two years of pre-med studies, she was blessed and set apart by President John Taylor of the LDS Church to study medicine and headed off to the University of Michigan, where she graduated with a medical degree on her 23rd birthday, July 1, 1880. She studied for two more years, earning a degree in pharmacy and oratory.

David Hart, who oversaw the $250 million renovation of the Utah Capitol during his decade with the state, announced his resignation Tuesday.
Hart, executive director and architect of the Capitol Preservation Board, said he joining MOCA Systems, a Boston-based project management company, as a vice president and regional manager.
The company is opening a Salt Lake office and reportedly will help with construction of the federal government's nearly $2 billion spy center planned for Camp Williams.
"I realized all the goals I had set had been achieved," Hart said. The Capitol renovation, which took four years, included a massive earthquake retrofit of the granite building.
Tuesday, he told board members, including leaders of all three branches of government, that they have reached an "important milestone," moving from renovators to preservationists.
After a closed session, the board appointed its spokeswoman, Allyson Gamble, to be interim director during a review of how the statehouse complex is run.
"We realize this is a change in direction, and we want to make sure we get it right," said the board's chairman, Lt. Gov. Greg Bell. The review could take several months, he said.
Although there has been some talk of changing the structure of the board, Bell said he doubted that would be recommended. Instead, he said, the review will focus on the role of the executive director and other staff.

In 1909, acting as president of the duly authorized Capitol Commission, Utah’s
Governor William Spry issued the proclamation naming the commission members who
would ultimately preside at the 1916 ceremonies opening the Utah State Capitol.

The proclamation began: “WHEREAS, Under the provisions of Section 1, of
Chapter 64, Laws of Utah, 1909, the Governor is directed to appoint a Commission to
be known as the Capitol Commission . . . ” With that preamble, the governor announced
the other members of the seven-man Commission:
• Secretary of State C.S. Tingey
• Attorney General A.R. Barnes
• Apostle John Henry Smith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints and president of the Utah Constitutional Convention in 1895
• Mr. John Dern, banker and leading Salt Lake businessman
• Mr. C.E. Loose, Provo banker and a owner of mining and industrial
companies
• Mr. M.S. Browning, vice president of Ogden’s Browning Arms Company

The Commission appointed John K. Hardy, the governor's secretary, as "Acting
Secretary." David Mattson, the newly elected Secretary of State, succeeded C.D. Tingey,
and Anthon H. Lund was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the death of John Henry
Smith. Upon his release as a member of the Commission Mr. Tingey was named its
secretary Acting Secretary John K. Hardy.

Beginning in May of 1911, the Commission met regularly for the next seven years
to oversee numberless studies and proposals, the selection of an architect and other
contractors, the contracts for all participants, and enough acrimonious disputes to satisfy
even the most feisty politico. For example, only four months after the first meeting the
Commission published a Program of Competition for the selection of an architect.
The Commission served at its own expense with the exception of their secretary,
who received a modest $100.0T0 per month stipend. That amount was later increased to
$150.00 per month. Secretary Tingey kept meticulous minutes of the meetings. The record
provides a fascinating glimpse into history.

Just two and one half years from laying the cornerstone the Commission was ready
for a formal grand opening on October 9, 1916. In the evening a general public reception
was held – the guests being received by the governor and members of the Commission in
the State Reception Room. Estimates of attendance at the festivities put the number at thirty
thousand guests were received.

The Capitol Commission met for the last time on December 29, 1916, and Secretary
Tingey, presented its biennial report." Copies of the last annual report, dated January 4
1917, (when the Legislature convened) were to be bound, prepared and delivered to the
members. The minutes of that late December meeting are the last entry in more than 545
pages of commission minutes. They illustrate how diligently the Commission had worked.
They were and were faithful overseers of every aspect of Utah’s beautiful, new State
Capitol.

The Capitol Preservation Board meeting will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Utah State Capitol complex Board Room located on the East side of the Rotunda.
The Board, created in 1998 by Utah’s Legislature and Governor Leavitt, is headed by all three branches of government. Namely, the Governor, the Chief Justice, the President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House (or their appointees), the Attorney General, the State Treasurer, the State Historic Preservation Officer and a number of legislators. Each member of the Board currently serves for the length of their term in office.

At a news conference in Salt Lake, speakers talked about how great the need is this year. One volunteer said things have become so bad, some people who donated a year ago are standing in the food line this year.
That's why Gov. Gary Herbert designated Saturday, Dec 5, as "Help Your Neighbor Day."
All people who are able are asked to donate a sack of canned food at any Smith's Food store or directly to the Utah Food Bank everybody in Utah will be able to have something to eat.

Governor Gary R. Herbert has formally designated Saturday, Dec. 5, as "Help Your Neighbor Day." Lt. Governor Greg Bell will read the declaration, which cites an increasing demand for services during the winter months, at a Friday news conference at the Utah State Capitol.
Items can be delivered to any Smith's location statewide, the Utah Food Bank (3150 South 900 West) and regional food banks and emergency food banks throughout Utah.
"As Utahns, we truly are blessed this holiday season," Governor Herbert said. "But there are still those among us who are facing challenges. Lt. Governor Bell and I ask that all Utahns think of their neighbors during this season of giving and reach out to them this Saturday."

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Scott McCoy is resigning his position in the Utah State Senate.ABC4.com was the first to break this story early Tuesday afternoon.His resignation is effective Friday, December 4th. McCoy is the state senate's only openly gay member.In a statement released to ABC 4 News, McCoy said:
“I’ve been honored to serve the citizens of Utah and of District 2 for the last four years. My time in the Senate has been profoundly rewarding, but also an enormous personal sacrifice. The senators and representatives of Utah really make a terrific commitment of their time for the benefit of this state. It’s not just during the 45 days of the session. It’s every day and night. It’s during interims and constituent phone calls. My hat is off to my 103 colleagues who make this sacrifice day in and day out, every year.
“I’ve personally come to a crossroads in my career where I need to devote my full time and energy to the practice of law. To do any less is a disservice to my firm and my family. Unfortunately, I simply cannot find the necessary time to be a successful attorney and give the time and energy to fully represent the residents of my district.
“I’m very proud of the work I was able to accomplish as a Senator. We changed important policies, opened many minds, and broke down many barriers. Certainly, there is much more to be done. But for now, I need to leave that work in other capable hands.”
Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker expressed his appreciation to Senator McCoy, saying he has been a strong, articulate force in the State Senate. Becker also gives his full support to senior staff member Ben McAdams who shows interest in seeking to fill Scott McCoy's senate seat.

U.S.S. Utah Exhibit Opens at the Capitol

A special exhibit about the U.S.S. Utah opened on March 9, 2009 at the Capitol and will remain there until December 7, 2009. The exhibit is the first of its type since the re-opening of the Capitol in January of 2008. It is an effort of the Capitol Preservation Board staff, the Fort Douglas Military Museum, and interested individuals. Its opening marks the U.S.S. Utah’s 100th anniversary year. The production of the exhibit was sponsored by a generous contribution from Ancestry.com, a part of the Generations Network.

The original design of the Capitol included gallery space for exhibitions mounted by the Utah Art Institute. The law governing the Institute was a bill referred to simply as the Art Bill of 1899. Written and sponsored by Alice Merrill Horne, the bill created a mechanism, the first in the country, for sponsoring arts education in schools. It also made provision for sponsoring artists in Utah by purchasing and exhibiting the visual arts. The galleries on the Fourth Floor were designed, together with a Board Room, for the Art Institute. As part of the renovation of the Capitol, the Fourth Floor Galleries will feature rotating exhibits, some curated by the Capitol Preservation Board Office staff, some by visiting and collaborating museums and individuals. All exhibits will feature educator materials for pre- and post-visit (as well as classroom) activities for 4th and 7th graders whose curricula includes Utah History and Civics. This exhibit opens that program.

Thanksgiving Re-Cap!

Hundreds of needy Utah families received a Thanksgiving dinner who otherwise would have gone hungry.

Representatives with the Salt Lake City Mission say they served between two and three thousand people on Thanksgiving Day.

They also handed out clothing and personal care products. However the mission still needs help because donations have been down this year.

Sandy » Fans celebrated Real Salt Lake's championship trophy with high-fives, boisterous chants and plenty of hearty yells Tuesday.
On a day Utah Gov. Gary Herbert declared "Real Salt Lake Day," soccer lovers flocked to big bashes at the state Capitol and the team's Sandy stadium -- some of them even lined the route in between to wave to RSL's motorcade.
On Tuesday, about 6,000 fans spilled into Rio Tinto Stadium to cheer the team's momentous win against the star-studded Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday for the 2009 Major League Soccer championship.
"This team earned it," Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan said. "In our galaxy, these are the stars."

SANDY, UT - Having arrived to a spirited welcome from several hundred fans earlier today at Salt Lake City International Airport, the Real Salt Lake family will rest easy tonight before bringing its celebration to the people of Utah TOMORROW, Tuesday, Nov. 24, when the club will host events stretching from the State Capitol to Sandy in celebration of the Utah side's MLS Cup 2009 Championship. Real Salt Lake claimed Major League Soccer's title Sunday evening at Seattle's Qwest Field by defeating the Los Angeles Galaxy, 5-4, in seven rounds of penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw in regulation and overtime, providing Utah sports fans with their first champion in a major professional league since 1971, when the Utah Stars claimed the American Basketball Association title.

To begin the day, the team will serve as guests of Utah Governor Gary Herbert and the State's First Lady at a special luncheon at the Governor's Mansion, which will be followed by a 3:00 p.m. public celebration on the south steps of the Utah State Capitol building. Governor Herbert and other dignitaries will congratulate Utah's champions before giving way to addresses from RSL Owner Dave Checketts, Head Coach Jason Kreis, and Captain Kyle Beckerman, among others.

87-year-old William Hughes, a crew member of the USS Utah and a Pearl Harbor survivor, watches as the color guards present colors at the Utah State Capitol during the 100th anniversary of the ship's construction Monday. Artifacts from the ship were also placed on display and will be exhibited through the end of the year. The USS Utah was bombed and quickly capsized at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Fifty-eight enlisted men and six officers died when the Utah sank.

Recent rankings support economic development success in Utah and its cities!

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development is pleased that Utah cities and the State of Utah continues to receive economic development recognition in national surveys. Earlier this year, Utah ranked number 2 overall in the prestigious “Top 10 Pro-Business States” from Pollina Corporate. In their report “Rebuilding American’s Economic Power” they ranked each state in the annual study based on job retention and creation. Utah outperformed not only the western states but most of the rest of the country.

Recently, CNNMoney.com released its ranking of the top 50 places in America to start a business. Logan, Utah is one of only three cities west of the Mississippi to receive the recognition in the reports small metro section as a “Best Place to Start a Business.”
Logan has a wide diversity of economic sectors with a focus on Education, Manufacturing and Processing, Health, Agriculture, Retail and Business Services. The city’s largest employer is Utah State University, other large employers include the Cache County School District, IHC operated Logan Regional Hospital, Thermo-Fisher Laboratories, and Gossner Foods.Because of Logan’s economic climate, a number of Utah companies have chosen to headquarter their businesses in the city including Icon Health & Fitness, Hogi Yogi, S&S Power, Campbell Scientific, and NewDawn Technologies. Logan’s tax structure and pro business environment has made Logan an excellent choice for starting and growing a business according to the CNNMoney report.

The Capitol Store had a lot of input and entry forms from high school students throughout the state of Utah! Judging of designs will begin momentarily and the four winners will be contacted as soon as possible. Stay tuned to find out about dates.

High Schools with the most entry forms include; Skyline with 16 entries, North Ridge with 22, and South Summit with 27 entries.
The total amount of the entries received is approximately 85!

Visitors are now invited to tour the building via their mobile phones through a new text messaging method. After sending descriptive keywords to a specified number, visitors will receive text-message responses of information on various significant elements within the restored Capitol.
“We hope to attract tech-savvy visitors to the Capitol by providing them with a unique opportunity to enjoy a convenient self-guided tour directly from a cellular phone,” said Allyson Gamble, Director of Public Relations, Communications and Visitor Services.

Massasoit returned to the Utah State Capitol on November 5, 2009 after brief interviews with the media. Complete with a granite base and bronze plaque, Massasoit now stands on the East side of the Capitol complex.
Among those in attendance to welcome Massasoit back, were three of his decedents living in Utah. Tenth generation descendent, Glenn Baldwin and his wife Lois, from Salt Lake City, traveled up to view the re-instillation and met with former decedents, Mary Hilliard, 11th generation descendent from Ogden, and her daughter Joni Crane, 12th generation descendent from Vernal.
All three descendents were able to relate some history of Massasoit and take pictures with the famous statue after it had been erected.
They spoke with Denice Dallin Wheeler, relative to Cyrus E. Dallin, the internationally famous sculptor from Utah who sculpted Massasoit and offered him as a gift to the Utah State Capitol in 1922. Wheeler was happy to represent her famous Uncle by giving interviews with the media and speaking personally with the public.
After the re-instillation press conference, lasting no more than an hour, Massasoit was left to welcome future visitors to his new home at the Utah State Capitol.

Massasoit will be returning to the Utah State Capitol tomorrow durring a press confrence held at 11 a.m. on the East side of the Main Capitol Complex.
Massasoit, created by nationally recognized sculptor and Utah native Cyrus E. Dallin, is famously known as the Wampanoags Nation Chief who first welcomed the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock after they disembarked from the Mayflower.
Dallin’s sculpture was first unveiled at the Utah State Capitol on July 31, 1922 at a time when Utah struggled economically. The State graciously accepted the generous gift from one of its most famous sons, adding to the Capitol beautiful artwork they could not have otherwise afforded.

Capitol Store desgin contest Ends this FRIDAY!!!

Utah high school students have until this Friday at 5 p.m. to submit their designs for the Utah Capitol Store T-shirt Contest.
This contest, opening at the beginning of October, was created to offer Utah students the opportunity to use their skills and create art that can be used toward the Store.
Four winners will be chosen after Friday’s deadline. The chosen designs will be used on t-shirts for the store. Those selected will receive a free t-shirt of their design and a featured press conference held at the Utah State Capitol.
We are asking that designs reflect the Utah State Capitol or art pieces associated with Capitol Hill. Designs should be submitted in PDF file, digital image, or hand drawn. Entries must be postmarked, emailed, or hand delivered before 5:00 p.m. on November 6, 2009.

Election Day- Parking Tomorrow

Because November 3, 2009 is Eection day, the Capitol Complex has been selected as a voting site for several precincts. Please know we will have a lot of public needing to park their vehicles in the public parking areas. I think most cars will be in the East visitor parking areas since they are using the Beehive Room.

Chief Massasoit returns to the Utah State Capitol

Salt Lake City, Utah –
At 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2009, the monumental bronze sculpture of Massasoit, created by nationally recognized sculptor Cyrus E. Dallin, will return to the Utah State Capitol Grounds. The sculpture greets visitors as they enter the Capitol Hill Complex from the east side of the Capitol. A brief press conference related to the re-installation will take place at the foot of the statue at the time of installation.

Massasoit is famously known as the Wampanoags Nation Chief who first welcomed the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock after they disembarked from the Mayflower. Dallin created the sculpture in the 1920’s. He was born and raised in Springville, Utah, and is known internationally for his realistic rendering of Chief Massasoit as well as the Angel Moroni statue that sits on top of the Salt Lake City Temple.

Dallin’s sculpture was first unveiled at the Utah State Capitol on July 31, 1922 at a time when Utah struggled economically. The State graciously accepted the generous gift from one of its most famous sons, adding to the Capitol beautiful artwork they could not have otherwise afforded.

During the first unveiling, Dallin expressed his desire that the state accept the gift as a token of his love for his native state of Utah. “These mountains are linked with the story of the Indian,” he said. “In setting up this man of peace, who saved the Plymouth Colony, I have a hope…that I might model the old Chief Washakie of the Shoshones, who, too, was a man of peace; and he wielded as potent and saving an influence over the first Pioneers…as ever did Massasoit over the Pilgrims.”

Classically trained in Paris, Dallin practiced sculpting during a period in art history which was a flowering of classical architecture and sculpture.

Capitol Curator Judith McConkie, PhD, noting that Massasoit is often compared to famous European sculptures, states that “The pose and the idealized body are a direct homage to Michelangelo’s David”.

Massasoit originally stood in the center of the Capitol’s Rotunda from 1923 until 1957, when it was moved outside to the South entrance of the Capitol Hill Complex. Now, complete with a new platform, Dallin’s beloved sculpture will be able to once again call Utah’s Capitol home.

The FREE U.S.S. Utah exhibit will be coming to an end on December 7th. This exhibit, located on the fourth floor of the Utah State Capitol building, celebrates the history and significance of one of the most famous battleships at Pearl Harbor.
With beautiful display cases containing newspapers, clothing, battleship artifacts, and miniature replicas, as well as walls covered with historical photographs of the ship and its people, there is something for everyone.

Make sure you make it up to the Capitol to see this historically powered exhibit before it closes!

“Happy Halloween” and “Trick or Treat” were popular phrases uttered on Thursday at the Utah State Capitol building. Throwing their annual Halloween party, the Governor’s Office staff invited fellow staff members and their families to dress up and participate in the festivities. Children and adults alike dressed up in an array of colors and costumes, walking from office to office Trick-or-treating throughout the Capitol complex.

Utah high school students have until November 6th to submit their ideas for the Utah State Capitol Store T-shirt design contest.

Designs should reflect the Utah State Capitol or the various art pieces featured on Capitol Hill.
