Governor’s Office Halloween Party
“Happy Halloween” and “Trick or Treat” were popular phrases uttered on Thursday at the Utah State Capitol building. Throwing their annual Halloween party, the Governor’s Office staff invited fellow staff members and their families to dress up and participate in the festivities. Children and adults alike dressed up in an array of colors and costumes, walking from office to office Trick-or-treating throughout the Capitol complex.

T-shirt Contest for Students!
Calling All High School Artists!
What does the State Capitol mean to you?
The Utah Capitol Store is holding a contest to select four new t-shirt designs to be sold in the store. The contest is open to all Utah High Schools students. Designs should reflect the Utah State Capitol or the various art pieces featured on Capitol Hill. Contestants are encouraged to tour the Utah State Capitol and create their own unique designs reflecting what the Capitol represents, signifies and symbolizes to them through an expression of art made for a t-shirt.
"The Utah State Capitol is one of the most noble, sophisticated buildings in the state. It was built when Utah's entire population was barely 250,000 -- about the same number as the entire population of Weber County today. The Capitol was built at great cost to those very poor citizens from a design by Richard Kletting, an Austrian who came to Utah after an education and work experience in Paris during the time of the construction of memorable places like the Paris Opera. It is a magnificent structure,” stated Judith McConkie, PhD, Capitol Curator.
Many people, from all over the country and world, come to visit our newly restored State Capitol building on a daily basis. For many, this building is known as “a miracle, heavenly, awe striking, beautiful and radiant,” but we want to know what it means to you.
Allyson Gamble, Director of Communication and Visitor Services expressed, “I am excited the students of Utah will have an opportunity to express their creative ideas through art reflecting Utah’s great historical icon. Visitors can bring home a little piece of Utah through the eyes of one of our youth.”
Designs should be submitted in PDF file, digital image, or hand drawn. Entries must be postmarked, emailed, or hand delivered before 5:00 p.m. on November 6, 2009.
Four winners will be chosen and their designs will be used in The Utah Capitol Store. Winners will receive a free t-shirt of their design and a featured press conference held at the Utah State Capitol.
Hurry and get your design in today! Please contact 801.538.1400 or email mpoland@utah.gov with any questions. Visit the State Capitol’s Web site for more information on tours and building hours, www.utahstatecapitol.utah.gov
